Official Discussion Transcript for Chapter 2, Part 2

[20:37:28] Jordana McMahon: so why doesn’t he just ditch his family
[20:37:34] Ina Centaur: Harman, I *simply* don’t beleive Rearden is a masochist!
[20:37:36] Ina Centaur: >.<
[20:37:37] Ina Centaur: *believe
[20:38:19] Ina Centaur: hehe
[20:38:30] Ina Centaur: there’s also a lot of textural support…
[20:38:43] Ina Centaur: where Rearden attempts to pull back his fury in light of his family’s torturing him
[20:38:53] Ina Centaur: the unstated question — what right do they have to treat him that way?
[20:39:15] Ina Centaur: (also, i think he took the long walk home because he’d rather not have to go back to them. procrastination from pain?)
[20:39:22] Harman Mayo: she’s pretty good - have seen her a few times
[20:39:29] Sodovan Torok: Gotta go, guys, sorry…
[20:39:32] Sodovan Torok: See you later.
[20:39:38] Harman Mayo: whoops - crossed windows!
[20:39:41] Snow Woodget: Take care
[20:39:47] Ina Centaur: ta sod..
[20:40:01] Ina Centaur: yeah, so as an aside..
[20:40:23] Ina Centaur: the prob with a discussion like this is… i guess people on SL don’t have time to read :-|
[20:41:07] Snow Woodget: Not so sure about that… I’m going to niggle about the dual start times again. :)
[20:41:12] Ina Centaur: jordana, why doesn’t Rearden ditch his family… well, a part of him believes that they’re trying to be nice to him
[20:41:18] Ina Centaur: he’s trying to lend them his mercy
[20:41:35] Jordana McMahon: I still don’t get that
[20:41:44] Jordana McMahon: why is he so nieve
[20:42:07] Jordana McMahon: or why does he continue to misinterpret
[20:42:07] Ina Centaur: he believes that people are inherently good
[20:42:18] Ina Centaur: he doesn’t beleive that people are capable of evil… and especially not his family!
[20:42:26] Snow Woodget: I think at least in part, it’s because he’s not sure that they’re the problem. When something’s so much the norm around you, it becomes hard to identify for lack of something to contrast it to.
[20:42:33] Jordana McMahon: good god his mother is the worst
[20:42:49] Ina Centaur: also, there’s an earlier topic that was brought up before the east coasters had to sign off to zzz — btw, snow, the time was “ad-hoc-ly’ changed to try to accomodate their schedules
[20:43:50] Jordana McMahon: yes I understand that for someone who isn’t out in the world much
[20:44:01] Jordana McMahon: like a child or possibly a wife
[20:44:15] Jordana McMahon: but he is a successful person
[20:44:38] Jordana McMahon: he must have to deal with people outside his family
[20:45:03] Jordana McMahon: has he never seen how other families operate
[20:45:16] Ina Centaur: well, if you read it from a “benevolent perspective”
[20:45:22] Ina Centaur: much of it sounds like the usual fussing
[20:45:49] Ina Centaur: but, Rand’s point is definitely to make Rearden seem like the victim of his family…
[20:45:52] Ina Centaur: more specifically…
[20:46:04] Ina Centaur: Rearden’s Metal / creation / ability to create
[20:47:29] Jordana McMahon: I don’t understand that last how is the metal/creation.ability to create realted to being a victom
[20:47:41] Jordana McMahon: related
[20:48:36] Harman Mayo: creators are often victimized by those around them
[20:48:54] Harman Mayo: everyone wants a piece of the action
[20:49:02] Jordana McMahon: ok i get that
[20:49:14] Ina Centaur: not necessarily action though…
[20:49:29] Harman Mayo: a vernacukar term
[20:49:42] Ina Centaur: there’s a sort of jealousy from his family. but, it’s not exactly that they want to be able to do what Rearden does
[20:49:44] Harman Mayo: could have said spoils
[20:50:17] Harman Mayo: ciao
[20:50:21] Ina Centaur: well, Harman, it’s much more than spoils… Rearden offers his family extreme financial luxury… but yet they’re still not satisfied
[20:50:32] Harman Mayo: sorry - did it again
[20:50:44] Ina Centaur: fame also comes with being associated with Rearden… however… his brother Philip would *rather* not be associated
[20:50:55] Harman Mayo: True
[20:51:17] Harman Mayo: but he was quick to take the money
[20:51:24] Ina Centaur: (hoo. glad that was wrong window. ;-P )
[20:51:36] Harman Mayo: and also very ungracious about it
[20:51:39] Ina Centaur: hmm not totally quick though..
[20:51:44] Ina Centaur: he had to ask if Rearden would give it in cash rather than check
[20:51:56] Ina Centaur: he doesn’t want any association… so is it really spoils that he wants?
[20:52:11] Harman Mayo: i think he would have taken a check
[20:52:25] Jordana McMahon: are his family embarassed by him
[20:52:41] Ina Centaur: nah, remember the part where he says that his organization is against people like Rearden and it would embarass them that their greatest donor is the type of capitalist they dont’approve of?
[20:52:53] Harman Mayo: Phillip sees himself as superior to Rearden because he’s altruistic
[20:53:40] Ina Centaur: yes :-)
[20:53:54] Harman Mayo: yes - but i think that the money would have been accepted - even if from a “tainted” source
[20:53:55] Jordana McMahon: are they the kind of people who like to spend mony but don’t want to get there hands dirty
[20:55:15] Harman Mayo: I think they are like most charities - they will accept any money that comes their way
[20:55:45] Ina Centaur: harman: i think you might also want to consider the fact that phil spent his entire day asking a dozen sponsors… and didn’t get anyone to sponsor
[20:55:52] Harman Mayo: but again - my perspective is colored by my own experiences
[20:56:12] Harman Mayo: or did he?
[20:56:15] Ina Centaur: maybe his terms just didn’t click with the sponsors. sponsors tend to like vanity of name… but perhaps they were all greedy capitalists whom his org would want money from but not support from o_O
[20:56:33] Harman Mayo: perhaps it was a ploy to get his brother to dome through
[20:56:38] Ina Centaur: but, that is just speculation.. yes, btw, the convo about sponsorship came up when Rearden asked his brother what was wrong
[20:56:48] Ina Centaur: and phil mentions his unsuccessful funder-less day
[20:57:28] Harman Mayo: but i dislike phillip intensely - so question the veracity of his statement
[20:57:50] Ina Centaur: jordana, we’re not sure about Phil’s organization… however, the chapter does mention that they are against capitalists
[20:58:12] Jordana McMahon: i guess I missed that
[20:58:16] Ina Centaur: hi mesanna
[20:58:47] Ina Centaur: hi minerva
[21:00:13] Ina Centaur: well, perhaps it was a ploy…
[21:00:47] ToryLynn Writer: ok.. sorry to just.. listen and run, but I have to get to bed :)
[21:00:49] Ina Centaur: but, if Phil hadn’t mentioned his failure, Rearden would have given him the money anyways… there’s the bit where Rearden goes benevolent-hero again
[21:00:50] Harman Mayo: Phillip has always been supported by his brother
[21:01:10] Ina Centaur: he sees his brother as this struggling ant.. and he could just so easily and effortlessly help him
[21:01:27] Jordana McMahon: bye tory
[21:01:32] ToryLynn Writer: bye!
[21:01:34] Ina Centaur: yup Phil went to college, supported by his brother… never figured out what to do and is now kinda like Rearden’s bad puppy o_O
[21:01:36] Harman Mayo: ttfn, tory
[21:01:37] Ina Centaur: nite tory!
[21:02:09] Harman Mayo: yes - Phillip is a leech
[21:02:26] Harman Mayo: and a self righteous one at that
[21:02:45] Ina Centaur: oops minerva… come up the stairs
[21:03:21] Ina Centaur: “self-righteous leech”
[21:03:29] Ina Centaur: that’s a Harman Mayo quoteable ;-P
[21:04:31] Harman Mayo: *smiles*
